Are my files uploaded?
No. The ZIP is made and opened inside your web browser, on your own device. Your files and your password never leave it.
How strong is the protection?
The Strong setting uses AES-256, the same standard banks and governments use. With a long password (four random words or 12+ characters) it can't be guessed in any practical amount of time. The Opens anywhere setting uses the older ZIP lock, which is easy to break, so only use it for files that aren't sensitive.
The person I sent it to can't open it. What now?
Some computers' built-in zip opener can't open AES-256 files and either shows an error or asks for the password again and again. They can open it on this page (choose Open a locked ZIP), or with any zip app. If that's not possible, make a new one with Opens anywhere, but only for files that aren't sensitive.
Can it open any password-protected ZIP?
It opens ZIPs locked with AES (128, 192 or 256) or the older ZIP lock, as long as you know the password. It can't break or guess a password. ZIPs split into several parts and other formats like .7z or .rar aren't supported.
Are the file names hidden?
No. A ZIP keeps the file names readable even when the contents are locked. If a name itself is private, rename the file before you add it.
How do I send the password?
A different way than the file. If the ZIP goes by email, send the password by text message or tell them on the phone. Never put it in the same email.
