Would your business pass a compliance check?

Pick the rules that apply to you and answer a few yes-or-no questions. You'll get a score and the gaps auditors and insurance companies look for first. Your answers stay in your browser.

Which rules apply to your business?

Who it's for: Medical, dental and other practices that handle patient information, and the businesses that work for them.

  1. 1Have you done a written security risk analysis in the last 12 months?

It's the first thing auditors ask for, and the most common gap in HIPAA cases.

  2. 2Do you have signed business associate agreements with every vendor that touches patient data?

Your IT company, billing service, email and cloud providers all count.

  3. 3Does everyone have their own login, with two-step login on email and patient systems?

Shared logins make it impossible to show who looked at what.

  4. 4Are laptops, phones and servers that hold patient data encrypted?

A lost encrypted laptop usually isn't a reportable breach. An unencrypted one is.

  5. 5Do you keep logs of who accessed patient data, and does someone review them?

HIPAA expects you to notice when someone looks where they shouldn't.

  6. 6Has your whole team had HIPAA privacy and security training this year?

Training must be done and documented, including for new hires.

  7. 7Are patient data backups tested, with a plan to keep working during an outage?

HIPAA requires a backup and emergency plan, not just a backup.

  8. 8Do you send patient information by email only when it's encrypted?

Regular email can be read along the way and sits in inboxes forever.

  9. 9Do you have written steps for what to do if patient data is exposed?

Breaches have notification deadlines. Not knowing them makes a bad day worse.

Questions people ask

Is this legal advice?

No. It's a plain-English checklist of the common requirements to help you see where you stand. Your attorney, auditor or compliance officer has the final word.

Which checklist should I use?

Medical and dental practices use HIPAA. Accountants, tax preparers and other financial businesses use the FTC Safeguards Rule. Anyone who takes cards should also check PCI. Defense contractors use CMMC. Some businesses need more than one.

Can you help us get compliant?

Yes. We handle the technical side (two-step login, encryption, backups, monitoring) and help with the written plans, and we work alongside your auditor or compliance advisor.
